. This is a muerte I created for an auction benefiting the Spanish Colonial Art Society. It brought in $1,300.00 for them. The title was "Dona Petrolonia," the patren saint of riseing gas prices.
This piece is entirely made of bone. The Carreta, or cart, is carved from Moose antler. The Muerte's rib cage and pelvis are carved from Elk antler. The rest of the skeleton is carved from Moose antler. La Muerte and Carreta stand approximately 9 inches tall. This is New Mexico's version of the death cart. She is named Dona Sebastiana. Since these figures often carry a bow and arrow, this name is apparently a reference to Saint Sebastian, who was pierced by arrows. Death figures were not available from commercial sources and could only be made locally; thus they were among the last pieces to be made in New Mexico before the Santero Tradition died out. Some figures may date as late as 1910 to 1920, a time when few other images were being produced locally.
Left View "My plans with these Muertes is to display them in situations that parallel todays news headlines. This piece is approx. 9 inches tall and is carved entirely out of Moose antler. The platform is made of local wood. The soldier is sitting on his helmet carved from moose antler, holding his bone rifle, and smoking his bone cigarette. "This Death cart (Dona Sebastiana) was a commissioned piece for a good friend, Rex. The entire piece is carved from moose antler including the cart and her hair is made from buffalo hide. I've crossed her legs because, after all, she was a lady. You never know where a bent crooked arrow will end up.......and you never know when your time is up. This piece is entitled " El Fin" ( the end)."
